mak(h)er mag

mak(h)er mag

okay, full disclosure here: i may have gotten entirely carried away with making things & therefore completely neglected to blog about, well, anything at all. the good news is that one of these things that i have been working on is a super project that i am legitimately overexcited about: mak(h)er mag.

mak(h)er mag is a zine that celebrates & connects womxn creatives who incorporate elements of  feminism, sustainability or ethical practice/social enterprise into their work. it also supports local charities by donating all profits to a different community charity group each month.

issue #1 debuted way back in march (again, i really dropped the proverbial blogging ball here) at the hobart zine fair held at visual bulk gallery. it featured the absolutely kick ass: screen pinter & knicker maker  hag club; florist extraodinaire, flos botanical studio; multi-talented string instrumentalist, fiona steele & denim revivers, lazy peach. all profits from issue #1 were donated to support, help, empowerment – a tassie based ngo which provides assistance to victims of domestic violence & runs community engagement programs to change the discourse around this huge societal issue. we raised almost $50 for this group, which was a great start to mak(h)er mag.

issue #2 of mak(h)er mag has just been finished & it’s a bonzer, too! i had a chat to 3 more wonderfully creative womxn who are making waves with their work. fibre artist & educator, ani lee aka close knit; silversmith, laura mckay aka hoodooloulou & visual artist, laura e. kennedy all share their stories in this issue. in response to the current situation facing the tasmanian wombat population (namely the epidemic of sarcoptic mange & sanctioned culls), all profits from the sale of this issue will be donated to wombat rescue tasmania.

i am so happy about this project & so excited to see it growing, bit by bit. if you’f like to grab a copy, head to my etsy store & you can buy issue #1 & #2 there.

oh! & if you are a womxn creative or a charity group that would like to get involved, give me a bell – i would love to hear from you!
